Megan Mueller

VOLUME:
Where do you live / where do you work?

Megan Mueller:
Live/work space in Fashion District Downtown LA.

Volume: Can you give a quick description of your work space?

Mueller:  1000 square feet on third floor of warehouse, wall of windows facing west.  Have access to the roof where I do anything particularly loud or smelly.

Volume: What’s your day to day studio schedule like?

Mueller:  Both incredibly focused and incredibly all over the place.  I try to group activities like sourcing materials, reading, writing, drawing, painting, cutting wood into groupings of time.  But I give myself full permission to work on multiple pieces/projects at once.

Volume: Who’s work have you been looking at lately?

Mueller:  Amanda Ross Ho, Rachel Harrison, Alexis Smith, Richard Tuttle

Volume: What influences your work outside of the studio?

Mueller:  I am extremely influenced by stand up comedy and improv.  I love the idea of performer and audience coming together with the goal of connection, that sharing experiences and storytelling can create (but is not guaranteed) a completely new experience - the point where silence becomes laughter.

Volume: What kind of work are you currently making?

Mueller:  Right now, I’m developing work around the idea of materialization and specifically the moment when images collapse into each other.  So I’m working with military camouflage, animal markings, magic eye patterns, and infinity pools in paintings, drawings and sculptures.

Volume: Any upcoming projects?

Mueller: Group show at Field Projects in New York called Impossible Geometries, curated by Lauren Haynes and on view until December 19th.

Group show at Merchants of Reality in San Francisco called Full Circle and on view until December 12th.

Two person show at Winning/Losing Studios in Los Angeles in April.

Exciting curatorial project with Sam Scharf launching in January (details to come soon)!
